09 AL JABBAAR – ENFORCES REPAIR

THE COMPELLER – THE ONE WHO ENFORCES REPAIR AND RESTORES THAT WHICH IS BROKEN MAKING IT WHOLE AGAIN. HE TAKES HOLD OF THINGS AND FORCES THEM TOGETHER.

He is Allah, besides Whom there is no god; the King, the Holy, the Giver of peace, the Giver of security, The Guardian over all, the Mighty, the Enforcer, the Possessor of every greatness 59:23

This is an attribute for the tyrants and oppressors to be aware of, because their misdeeds will not go unpunished. Yet this Name has another dimension: al-Jabbar is the One who is able to restore and mend what is broken.

The word ‘compel’ comes from the Latin word ‘compellere’ which means to drive together. It used to be referred to a shepherd when he herded his cattle together into one place with the help of a sheepdog. The cattle found the sheep dog threatening but in reality it was a protector who stopped them from getting separated.

The Arabic word for a splint that is used to help an arm heal when it is broken is “Jabeera” from the same root jabara. Thus, when we feel broken, we need to go to the only One who can mend our state – al-Jabbaar.

REFLECTION

The Prophet (pbuh) went to Taaif to ask the people for their protection but instead they threw stones at him until his feet bled. The Prophet (pbuh) called out to Allah;
“O Allah! To you alone I complain my weakness, my scarcity of resources, and the humiliation I have been subjected to by people. O Most Merciful of those who have mercy! You are the Lord of the weak, and You are My Lord too. To whom have you entrusted me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy to whom you have granted authority over my affair? But as long as You are not angry with me, I do no care, except that Your favor is a more expansive relief to me. I seek refuge in the light of Your Face by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest Your anger or Your displeasure descend upon me. Yours is the right to reproach until You are pleased. There is no power and no might except by You.”

It was the dua’ of someone broken.
Divinity responded by sending a young boy by the name of Addams who came to him with some grapes and kissed his bleeding feet.
Al Jabbaar healed the broken of the Prophet (pbuh) in another way too. He bestowed upon him the journey to the heavens (Israel wal Mi’raaj).

BENEFITS OF RECITATION

Recite YAA JABBAAR after Fair Salaa to be safe from hardship and to enforce repair of a broken heart
Some of the great scholars would supplicate “YAA JAABIRUL KASEER” when they were faced with overwhelming difficulty, meaning “Oh You who mends everything that is broken.”
