The Prophet (pbuh) had a son called Tahir who died in infancy. When he died some people taunted him calling him ‘Abtar’ which means an animal without a tail – one who had no succession. This sura was revealed in reply to those who taunted him. ‘Kawthar’ comes from the word ‘kathara’ which means plenty. The traditional description of Kawthar is that of a spring in Janna. ‘Kawthar’ also means abundance of descendants. It is a fact that none can correctly count the descendants of the Prophet (pbuh) whereas those who taunted the Prophet (pbuh) are unknown. This sura gives consolation to the Prophet during his early persecution.
