The sura begins with the command of Iqra’ (Read) and ends with the command of Waqtarib (come close) to Allah. Closeness to
Divinity by extension means reaching ones full potential which is only achieved through knowledge and its application (Read, learn, write – share). The sura continues with a clear indication of one who refuses to take this path – it is the one who considers himself independent of Divinity and thus rejects the Qur’an. A historical example is given in the form of Abu Jahl who was a celebrity personality of Makka – he had it all – intelligence (he was known as Abul Hakam – father of wisdom), wealth (was generous as well) and was respected by the Makkans but he was a traditionalist who refused to consider the message of Muhammad (pbuh) mocking him, threatening him and terrorising his followers. The sura warns him of the consequences of his actions and ends with an order not to obey those like him but get close to Allah through submission (Sijda) – This is the wajib sajda in this sura.
